I did exactly this when I was laid off 9 years ago. I paid $150 per month under the Obamacare marketplace instead of COBRA

I usually request that the employer pay for an additional month or two of health insurance beyond the standard Cobra plan because I have small kids, they usually agree to that. You could try that as well.

We overpaid SO much by using COBRA. State policies were so much cheaper

I could be wrong, but I don’t believe that you can get the Obama insurance if you don’t have an income of some sort. Maybe unemployment would suffice I don’t know.
Thank you for this! Was just let go last week and have no idea what to do I’ve never been in this position before. 😣

Also if you have Costco they also offer a no insurance discount on RX that is VERY competitive

you don't have to pay the cobra premium at the same time you elect. You get 45 days to pay the premium. Go ahead and sign up but don't pay the premium unless you need to use it.

close. it covers you back to the first day of lost coverage, not your termination date. if you terminate on Tuesday the 15th and your benefits continue until the end of the month, Cobra takes effect on the first day of lost coverage, which would be the first of the month following your termination date. most benefits are good through the end of the month

In Arizona, if a person is fired or laid off and they go on unemployment, they are automatically eligible for Medicaid. They just have to apply so it’s free health insurance while they’re unemployed.

As a former HR assistant I always told people who were laid off this. In all my years I only had 1 person who needed to purchase Cobra because of an hospital emergency.

Also, check your benefits. Some employers stop coverage the day you leave, but many benefits will continue until the end of the month. If you left or were terminated at the beginning of the month you may be covered for the remainder of that month.

ACA insurance (Obamacare) is the best. I retired early and my policy is now 200/month.
