@60minutes: On the 40th anniversary of the Challenger explosion, 60 Minutes revisits a 1996 interview with engineers who said they tried to stop the launch. The space shuttle broke apart shortly after liftoff, killing all seven crew members, including teacher Christa McAuliffe. #nasa #challenger #spacelaunch

My uncle is the person that tested the Challenger! He was the one who said something was wrong that day, and no one listened! I miss him every day for that and I know we never could live with himself after it happened

Originally big bird was supposed to be on this flight. But it was decided a school teacher would be more symbolic. We almost had a generation of kids watch big bird go. But either way you cut it this was a sad story. We should always honor those of us who dare to take the torch of humanity further into space. Whether they are a teacher, a baker, or just some person wearing a suit on a kids show. All of those who are brave enough to carry that torch deserve admiration and to be held in the memory of people.

My teacher was a semifinalist. We were watching that day and hoped to keep watching and learn about science from space. I was a senior in high school, and the loss of the Challenger defined our senior year. 💔💔💔

They knew the O-ring was a problem and they still let them go. I witnessed this from Coggin o’steenHonda in Orlando, Florida well I was on a sales call looking out the window. We could always see the shuttles launch from there, and we all witnessed the explosion. It was horrific. The gases hung in the air for hours and hours and hours it was awful.🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲

I not only remember watching this in grade school, but we also studied this in college. We learned that groupthink contributed to the disaster.

SO SAD! I remember sitting in elementary school watching it with my class. My teacher knew the astronaut who was a teacher. She immediately burst out crying.

For anyone interested, NASA posted all of the lessons Christa created and they are open source to use in classes, scouts, or youth groups. I’ve done a number of them with my students and I always start with the live video from the day

I remember the tv being wheeled in our classroom for it and I remember my teachers crying. I know that I saw the explosion, but I had just turned 7 and I didn't understand what happened. Then they wheeled the tv back out of class and that was it.
