@leahshomestead: A lot of people recommend egg yolk tanning because it’s fast and easy — and yes, it does work. But after finishing both an egg yolk–tanned rabbit hide and a bark-tanned rabbit hide, the difference is obvious. Egg yolk tanning is quicker, but the hide is not as soft and tears easily under stress. Bark tanning takes more time and patience — in my case, six days — but the result is softer, thicker, and far more durable. This isn’t about one method being “right” or “wrong.” It’s about understanding what each method actually does to the hide fibers. If you’re choosing a tanning method, this is the part people usually don’t talk about. 👉 Comment “EGG” or “BARK” — which would you choose? #RabbitHides #HideTanning #HomesteadSkills #TraditionalSkills #Leatherwork

How many times can you reuse the bark tanning solution before you have to make a new batch?

I'd check AMAZON for tanning kits & read the customer comments for insights on the best processes, chemical & equipment suppliers. 👍🏻 (Just be careful buying ANYTHING through Amazon as they've become renowned for systematically PRICE GOUGING.)

Why do people think bark tanning is long? It's a normal process that creates hide that will last for years. And they aren't doing it one by one but in batches. Waiting a few days longer is really not labor intensive. Takes more time to properly rub in the egg yolk or brain.

thank you very much. I have about 60 hides stockpiled and was wondering how yours would turn out. I'm aiming to make a cloak out of them. I'm going with the bark tanning.

I am wanting to find a natural way to do this but unfortunately we don’t have trees to harvest and do not have chickens for eggs so this will be a challenge lol but I’m so excited

You could probably bark-tan the egg-tanned hide now to improve it. 👍🏻

so how I understand it: egg yolk is for speed or practice bark is for soft or durable

If you bark tan a white hide, will it dye the fur? Or will the fur remain white?

Egg Yolk tanning (assuming you smoke it which is the tanning part) uses the same mechanism used in smoke preserved/dried meats. The smoke converts some of the oils to acetylaldehyde which preserves it. Wet and dry stretching both soften the hide and help remove the “brown stuff” which is the fluid that rots (same juice as comes out of a steak).

The leather side of the bark-tanned hide is darker & seemingly less-supple than commercially-tanned rabbit hides I've had. Those I've had were A-1 premium quality, nice-looking, feeling, & smelling, & not homemade-seeming at all. If you can get YOUR hides to come out like that, I suspect you could make a LOT of money using them to make coats, hats, scarves, gloves, blankets, & boots.

Have you ever tried putting some neatsfoot oil on the egg tanned one? It might help soften, condition, and protect the leather side.
