🧁 :
Know ye that the creature commonly called the jellyfish is among the most ancient beings of the great seas, having endured upon this Earth for more than five hundred million years, long ere the age of dragons and mighty beasts now lost to time. Though named as a fish by common tongue, it is in truth no fish at all, for it possesseth neither bone nor backbone, nor gills by which fish do breathe.
This creature belongeth to the order known as Cnidaria and is found in all the oceans of the world, from the sunlit shores unto the dark and unfathomed depths. Its body is fashioned in great simplicity, being composed of nigh ninety and five parts water, and shaped as a bell with trailing tendrils, which men call tentacles. It hath neither heart nor brain, nor lungs for breath, but instead a simple net of nerves whereby it may sense light, touch, and the presence of food.
The jellyfish moveth not with strength nor great speed, but by the gentle pulsing of its bell, whereby it presseth water behind itself. Most often it is borne along by the will of the sea’s currents. Upon its tentacles lie small and fearsome instruments called stinging cells, which carry venom. By these, the jellyfish ensnareth its prey—small fishes and drifting creatures—and defendeth itself from harm.
Though humble in form, the jellyfish holdeth a rightful place in the order of the seas. It serveth as sustenance for turtles, great fishes, and birds of the ocean. In these latter days, its numbers have grown in certain regions, owing to the warming of the seas and the hand of mankind, which hath altered the balance of nature.
Some jellyfish are gifted with a wondrous power, for they glow with their own light in the darkness of the deep, a marvel known as living fire. Most strange among them is one kind that may return from age unto youth, thereby escaping death in a manner unseen in other beasts.
Thus may it be said that the jellyfish, though simple and lacking in noble form, is a creature of great wonder. Its long survival standeth as proof of its adaptability and the hidden wisdom of nature’s design.
