If you have ADHD, being told what to do can kill your motivation faster than the task itself 👇 You can be genuinely excited to clean your apartment, work on a project, or get something done.
But the second someone tells you to do it, that motivation can completely disappear.
Here's why: ADHD motivation is often highly dependent on interest, emotional engagement, and immediate rewards.
When you choose something yourself, you feel in control. There's a sense of freedom, ownership, and sometimes even excitement.
But when that same activity becomes an external demand, your brain may experience it very differently.
Suddenly, it's no longer something you WANT to do. It's something you HAVE to do.
And for some people with ADHD, that loss of autonomy can trigger resistance, frustration, or avoidance — even when you originally wanted to do the task.

We are wired for interest - not importance.
So here’s a friendly ADHD reminder: Sometimes the best way to motivate your special brain isn't to add more pressure. It's to give it more autonomy.
