![On 23rd February 1930, Horst Wessel, a member of the Sturmabteilung or SA, the paramilitary wing of the Nazi party, died after being shot on 14th February during one of the regular skirmishes between the SA & communists. Never one to overlook a fortuitous event, propaganda supremo Goebbels ran with it and elevated a street fighting thug to sainthood. Weasel’s death was mythologised, became an essential part of the Nazi zeitgeist & was used to justify ongoing violence against opponents of the party. A song written by Wessel, “Die Fahne Hoch” (The Flag [Raised] High) became the Nazi Party anthem. It’s also called “The Horst Wessel Lied.” On 10th September 2025, in Utah, a far right activist called Charles James Kirk was shot & killed by what at this time is an unknown assailant. The mythologising of Kirk has already begun, with politicians worldwide jumping on the bandwagon. Trump has announced that Kirk will be awarded a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom. Kirk, of course, espoused views that were the antithesis of freedom. On 14th June 2025, Democrat Melissa Hortman was murdered in Minnesota, because of her political beliefs.There were no lowered flags, no worldwide outcry, no medals, no casket escorted onto Air Force Two. As the US spirals towards some sort of ideological showdown, we need to ponder on historical parallels, learn the lessons, & not repeat the mistakes of the past.
