From a psychiatric perspective, the smiling fan represents “masked” or high-functioning depression, where outward affect appears normal or positive while the person experiences internal distress. Depression can exist without obvious low mood and instead present with anhedonia, emotional numbness, negative thinking, or hopelessness. Social pressures, stigma, and coping strategies can lead individuals to hide symptoms, meaning that external behaviour does not reliably reflect internal mood. #football #depression
