Are you sure US will and Can defend Taiwan? If they can't even defend South Vietnam who was not even advance militarily? Is only very defence offered and if any it would be limited hardware!

Taiwan has two main political parties, one party is completely bought by the US (peo-separitist) and the other party is pro-integratiin. Half the time one party governs and the other half of the time the other governs, meaning the people of Taiwan are 50:50 on the issue. This means that you can not say the people of Taiwan want one way or the other. Of course without US interference the decision would be clear.
