Nah I agree with OP, parenting is a 24/7 responsibility not a whenever you feel like it, there's absolutely no good reason to subject a kid to someone who's only gonna be around when it's convenient, that's just gonna cause major mental health problems for the kid throughout his life.

I was in a situation like this. I had to be blunt and explain to my mom in excruciating detail why I did not want that man around my children. She finally got it after that. If that convo doesn’t work, you have to go LC/NC.
