@draft_one: We think clothes become “ours” at the moment of purchase. When we buy them. When we imagine who we’ll be in them. But clothes don’t become yours through buying. They become yours through wear. #clothingdomestication #stylephilosophy #wardrobewellbeing #fashionresearch
I think we’ve known you long enough now.. for a room / flat tour !

Integration maybe? When u want clothes I see it’s like an external wanting, whereas putting on something I’ve cultivated time with is more aligned with my inner world.

The feeling of wearing an item of clothing out in public that I am not confident in yet reminds me of the early stages of learning a language. You feel awkward and stumble but it takes repeated public practice to begin to feel comfortable.

The absolute kings and queens of clothing domestication are kids. My kids will wear their clothes until they are on the verge of disintegration.

I am so fascinated by this idea, I also find it intruiging that I feel the need to "domesticate" the clothes I myself have sewn too, not just the ones engineered by others. Do you make clothes too?
I didn't expect my self made clothes (fit to my measurements, sensory issues, and personal style) to have this "unfamiliar" feeling on the skin, I thought custom items would skip this stage. your concept of domestication really paints an image in my mind of how every item first exists as a concept, then a tangible item that feels separate from one's body but touchable, and then becomes like a second skin the longer you acclimate to it and wear it in

It’s hard to put it into words. Sometimes I also can’t wear my ‘domesticated’ clothing from time periods of my life because it feels almost domesticated to that time

Clothes are an outer skin, so it makes sense that the repeating of the fabrics on will make them more skin-like and accepted as a natural part of ourselves. 🤔

In Walden, sHenry David Thoreau discusses clothing to argue against following fashion and for prioritizing function and individuality.

The more I wear them is one factor - especially for basics, lounging around in odd tshirts with a sentimental meaning (from an event or friend) etc. for other items it’s more about how creatively I style them, and when I find an outfit that really sings, repeating it (sometimes only years later). For thrifted items it’s also a specific kind of care I offer the item- being careful not to hang it incorrectly etc

I feel the term "resonance" could be used in this conversation, but I haven't finished my coffee, so I'll just leave it at that. I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this deeply about clothing.

maybe clothing embodiment? we start window shopping for different pieces, thinking of different places and ways we can use those, and then, poof, we usually do end up in those places wearing the clothes in the ways imagined during window shopping.

I think they become more a part of me. But not like my body. But like how my family is a part of me. Or my bed. I guess that’s maybe the definition of domesticated. But it feels more emotional and loving.

Domestication is a great word! In my opinion the thing that happens is: A change in ‘dominant thought’ about the item of clothing or yourself in some way… And what you’re giving us is a tool or process to be able to change that dominant thought to a different (better feeling) dominant thought… the process of which can be fun & interesting & pleasant & a lifelong journey- I look forward to this. TYSM!

You can think of one’s clothing metaphorically like a bird’s feathers. Like you don’t reach your “full colors” until you’re mature and like the way they look can inform you about your stage of life or your health’s. Like when you’re sick or on your period, your clothes are different. Even in the literal sense of wearing menstruation items, your clothes change with you on a deeper level??? Idk this is an interesting conversation

I feel like after some time, a clothing item becomes... personified. Its a little woo woo, but I imagine that at the start it has a separate energy, and then theres a stage we are meeting one another. with time, my own energy mixes into it and it becomes the same initial shirt but extremely familiar, like an old friend. Maybe this is what happens when we are in conversarion with things for a long time, and why people say xyz item has character.

Throwing clothes out I never wear becomes a struggle because I try it on for my perceived last time ever but then I see it with fresh eyes like the day I bought it and I'm usually wearing something I would never think to pair it with and it looks good and all of the sudden I'm inspired and I end up keeping it.

Excuse me for rambling, maybe I’m off base: It’s some how similar to the “I just started wearing a hat and everyone knows I’m not a hat person” joke going around. Putting on a trendy new outfit on is very different than dressing in fabrics and garments that you intimately know (and they know you too). A big structured nhl jersey is cool, but your old beautiful sweater that remembers how to drape around your shoulders? A different level of life.
