Eagle hunting is a traditional practice that has been carried out for centuries by the Kazakh people in western Mongolia, particularly in the Bayan-Ölgii Province. These skilled hunters, known as "eagle hunters" or "berkutchi," form a unique cultural community deeply connected to their environment and the art of falconry. Eagle hunting involves capturing and training large birds of prey, specifically golden eagles, to assist in hunting small game such as foxes and hares. The tradition is typically passed down through generations within families, with fathers teaching their sons the techniques and skills required to become successful eagle hunters. The process begins by capturing a young eagle from its nest, typically when it is around three months old. The eaglet is taken from the wild, and great care is taken not to harm or disturb the eagle's natural population. Once captured, the eagle is raised by the hunter, who forms a strong bond with the bird through patient training and daily interactions. Training an eagle involves familiarizing the bird with human presence and building trust between the hunter and the eagle. The eagles are trained to respond to specific commands and to fly high and fast, scouting for prey and following the hunter on horseback. The hunters wear a thick leather gauntlet known as a "burkitshi," which is used to protect their arms from the eagle's sharp talons. During the hunting season, which typically takes place in the winter months when the small game is more visible against the snowy landscape, the eagle hunter and his bird work together as a team. The hunter rides on horseback, scanning the terrain for potential prey, while the eagle soars above, alert for any signs of movement. When the eagle spots a target, the hunter releases the bird, which swoops down to capture the prey. Eagle hunting is not only a means of subsistence but also a revered cultural tradition in the Kazakh community. #mongolia #westernmongolia #mongol #mongolian #mongoliantiktok #ulaanbaatar #tiktokmongolia #ulgii #ulgiimongolia #ulanbator #nomads #nomad #travels #travel
