I have zero programming skills. Full stop. Claude AI was able to create me code that I uploaded to a ESP32 (WT32-ETH01) which allowed me to send commands from Qlab to control adressable LEDs. It also was able to seamlessly transition between accepting osc, artnet, and sacn from our lighting board all over ethernet. Take this with a grain of salt but I never in a million years would have been able to do that without hundreds of hours of researching how to code.

I believe you correct in that it makes good coders better, or at least faster. If one has the ability to do a thing that language to express the vision and experience do the job efficiently. You spotted problems someone without your skill would not and that makes a huge difference.

We went all in last summer. What my small team has been able to produce is staggering. We can complete projects in weeks that would have taken a year in the past. It’s like having a roomful of junior devs. All code does of course need the be checked. It loves to cover fails with fallbacks and does inexplicably bad things at times. I would be happy to share practices and downsides. (I’m a developer by day and theater tech at night)

As a programmer who is constantly building tooling for my small theatre company, I have taken to using my spec sheets and seeing how quickly I can build something vs AI, and I’ve been terrified honestly. We built an entire ticketing software suite because all of the ones we’ve wanted to use are just not a great fit for our venue and it’s incredible how quickly we got an end to end solution with unit tests system out. I definitely see what you’re saying, it takes a significant amount of time designing in a document, but I was already doing that before I built tools anyway. It scares me, it also thrills me. I’m not sure how to feel yet.

'We've been forced to talk in computer language and now we can be more human'. I think I would argue that it is more human to have to learn and speak the languages. I don't speak French, and I could use AI to translate and understand something, but I won't appreciate the beauty and nuance of the language until I learn and speak it. I believe in some ways this also applies to programming languages. AI helping accomplished programmers is one thing, but I think it will be a hindering crutch for the new person who would normally have had to put in the hard work of learning programming, but instead will now just tell AI what they want. This isn't like the invention of the calculator, where yes it does some of the work for you, but you need to understand the math you want to do to use the tool properly. With AI, it's removing the need for someone to understand what's going on under the hood. Rant over 😅

I work in Adobe programs. Would people really want to build their own creative apps from scratch when you have more stable, robust, and standardized tools already?

Regarding the question does it make coders better? It CAN, if the user takes advantage of the time saving to more deeply understand the whys and hows of the code.

When OCR was first created and being used, it was essentially worthless since you had to comb through every letter to make sure it was interpreted correctly and it felt like a waste of time. It’s way better nowadays but you still need a person to double check otherwise mistakes get through. This feels like that

you're the dude who created qlab?! this is sick dude. I'm a media server eng/programmer for big tours and also independent artist. big fan of the way you're approaching this.

I understand people’s concerns and hesitations around AI. Just like you, I often throw out a ton of excuses and caveats when showing people what AI can do so they don’t feel uncomfortable . That being said, I’m starting to get tired of making excuses for finding ways to use it as a tool that enhances my abilities. It’s exciting stuff and there should be no shame in sharing it.

Agree 1000% with you on "it can take a person who's a good programmer and make them faster in making good programs"

It’s the same thing with art. It wont make you a better artist, but it might make you faster at some workflows. Especially in this application your speaking of, where art and technology meet, it’s pretty amazing. But you gotta know what you’re doing first or slop is all you’ll end up with.

Thank you as always for your eloquent, insightful views. How do you feel about the security of the IP of Qlab in all this?

I volunteer at the local high school band. They use a lot of leds on their props. I use wled but don’t have the lighting options I would like. Any chance you can share your app? Need to figure out artnet

Yeah! All right :
If you have a solid understanding of how your software works and how to program, then you can make incredible stuff very quickly. I’ve made a few things in threejs and get it, but don’t have the time to make all the effects. Being able to define the problem AND course correct enabled me to make extremely complex effects in hours.

As someone who worked on Project CALO, I can tell you the latest models in only the last year have gotten to the point that we dreamed of. We have had code generators for decades, but these latest models are actually able to code at the level of the engineer.

I've been on the AI train from the beginning and screaming at my theatre people that this is coming.... realistically, it's been this good for the past 2 years in small chunks, but things are finally converging... and this is the worst it will ever be.

Even bad code for low risk projects is a huge benefit. There are so many cases where it’s “good enough.” And it’s probably going to get better right?
