I think light so it won't distract the eye. I looked at the comments and most say dark. I think if stain it light if you don't like it you stain dark before you finish it.

I did something similar in my house. had to cover a large seam. made a fake ceder beam 8x16. went with contrasting colors and it looks great 20 years and counting
