I think for me it has a lot to do with whether or not it’s an interesting question! Like “what happened?” tends to lead to an awkward convo where I try to efficiently explain years of medical trauma (while also feeling the need to put a positive spin on it to make them feel better?) and then them just not knowing what to do with it. What I think is MUCH more interesting is questions about what my life is Currently like as an amputee, rather than how I got here. Like you have questions about my leg and how it works or what kind of adaptations I use for sports and exercise or my experience of the world in general? That’s a much more interesting convo imo!

If it’s the first thing they say you is something about my leg then I’m like mind yo business. But if we have a conversation then asks about it then asks I’m happy to answer. Kids are the exception. I will always encouraging of their curiosity.

Honestly I feel feel neutral towards it honestly. Like I don’t love it or hate it I just answer the question and if I feel uncomfortable I kinda just try and steer the conversation away

Depends on what kind of mood I’m in. If I’m at the grocery store and have all the kids with me I get really annoyed when people stare and come up and ask me. If it’s a more social setting I don’t mind at all.

I don’t mind when people ask. I think about it this way: most people have never seen it in person or ever before. So I think people are just curious. It depends on their tone as well and how they ask!

My name is Romel and I’m not an amputee, but I’ve worked with thousands of amputees over 25 years and I’ve been around amputees all my life since my dad was a prosthetist as well. I don’t think most amputees mind questions if someone is curious and it usually depends on how comfortable they are with their loss. Having said that, there are some seriously mean people out there and over the years I’ve heard so many stories from my patients which hurt them deeply, or sometimes even creeped them out. It hurts amputees even more if they are mentally still recovering from their loss. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, when people ask I get really triggered because it is so recent and it’s hard to be going about my day and have someone ask me about the worst time in my life. I hope this will change over time and I will be more open and accepting

I don’t mind at all. If a kid with their parents shush the kids for asking I saw please let them ask, it’s how they learn about disabilities.

I dont mind it at all! It gives me a good opportunity to tell my testimony and how God brought me through it! And of course gives me a chance to make some dark humor jokes about my leg and test the waters lol

I get annoyed because most adults ask without caring if it's going to negatively affect people. Kids are just curious. I have this leg so I tell them it was a shark!
