How should I handle feedback that catches me off guard? That is the client topic I want to share with you this week. It happens to all of us. We’ve all had feedback that makes you want to go, wait, what? Where the hell is this coming from? It can be a really overwhelming experience. And that’s what happened to my client. She got caught off guard by fairly critical, random feedback from her boss and she wanted to discuss how to handle it differently next time. So here are three strategies that came out of the session that she decided she’d use next time… #1: CREATE A SAFE SPACE FOR YOURSELF Ideally, the feedback giver creates a safe space for you, but if they don’t, create it for yourself. You can easily say, “Thanks for the feedback. This is catching me a bit off guard, so if you don’t mind I’m going to take some time to think about what you said and I’ll get back to you.” Take the space you need to get perspective. Nothing wrong with that. #2: DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP NO MATTER HOW YOU REACT Even if you have a meltdown, or freeze and say nothing … don’t beat yourself up. Your brain is designed for fight, flight, or freeze if you feel under attack … it’s normal. You can always go later and say, “You know what, the feedback caught me off guard the other day. Now that I’ve had a chance to think about it, I have some additional perspective” #3: BE CURIOUS VS. DEFENSIVE If you can, get curious. Avoid defensive questions like, “Who said that?” or start blaming other people. If you can *really* get curious about why you’re getting this feedback, you’ll ask better questions and facilitate a much better dialogue. I’ve put some examples in the caption… And no matter what they say, remember, you get to decide what you do next. — QUESTIONS TO ASK: Knowing me, what do you think my motivation was? Why do you think that? What do you think the real problem is? What do you think the solution is? Or even…Here’s how I recommend I handle this in the future…and here’s how I need your help. #leadershiptok #corporatetok #leadership #bealeader #leadershipskills #executivecoach #corporatelife #successincorporate #saugeenshores #worklife
