Just cut off my best friend of 30 years. It is like a death, even worse when you realise the idea of the person you were mourning never really existed.

35 year friendship finished after my husband died and for some reason my friend made it about her because she couldn’t understand my grief. 💔

Ironically it's a gift. Because he no longer had an enemy in his inner circle. It's happened to me. And it's devastating but I'm thankful it happened.

Initially upsetting. But the reality is you haven’t lost the person you believed them to be. You’ve rid yourself of the person they actually are which is a good thing.

Sometimes the people that are the closest to you are there to watch you fail and want a front row seat.

The betrayal of an old, close friend is devastating. But it’s so true that on some level, I always knew.

my friend of 60 years is being very cool with me. I asked after her and her family, she never reciprocates. I initiate messages, she never does. it's really upset me. time to let go i think.

I was 17 when this first happened to me. I got a letter from a ‘good friend’ giving me unsolicited and very harsh ‘life advice’ because she’d gone away to college and I hadn’t. Basically she was telling me how she was moving on with ambition to ‘better herself’ and I was frittering away my life reading books. The way it was worded was so patronising and cruel it was deeply wounding. I never spoke to her again. This was over 40 years ago and I still remember exactly how I felt reading a letter I’d been so excited to receive.

My 'best friend' of 20 years revealed her true self when my mum had a stroke and everything wasn't about her anymore. She never once asked after my mum. Haven't had contact in 6 months but I think about it daily.

I live on the other side of the world from my ex best friend of 25 yrs. 10 yrs ago when I realised I was the one to maintain contact I just stopped calling & we haven’t spoken since. My father died last year & when she found out she saw my brother & told him how much she misses me…. I’m still waiting for that call

I ended a friendship of 35 years because I found out they’d been quietly counting every favour and every act of support, as if our entire relationship had been a ledger.

I cut off a friend of 15 years. She had a free holiday because my ex dumped me a month before the holiday. I paid for the whole thing, even the £100 to switch the name on the flight, she even some how made me pay for all the food and drinks (I was fragile, had a couple of epic panic attacks during the holiday). She’s a Director in a business, I’m in a normal job. She even met up with a guy she was seeing on the holiday, I sat there watching them lovey dovey. Took me 15 years to realise that she used me. It wasn’t just about the money it was everything. It took her 3 months to pay me back for just the food etc. I can’t imagine doing that to a friend, using them and not even suggesting paying them back for a £600 holiday. I hate that I took her, should have taken my sister. Such a big regret of my life. Sorry rant over 😅

I lost a 30+yr friendship after I stopped chasing and trying to get her to just meet for a coffee. It’s sad but what’s even sadder is that I don’t miss her in the slightest, took a long time to die.
