@earthlinged: It’s common for some meat eaters to use Indigenous people to try to justify their consumption of animal products. As well as being tokenising, this is often used to construct straw-man arguments against vegans. Vegans accept that there are people in the world who are not able to be vegan, and that this can include people from indigenous communities. However, appropriating other people’s situations or cultures to justify our own habits does not change the ethics of our choices, and it is also not respectful to the people being appropriated. It’s an attempt to hide our behaviours from moral scrutiny by aligning ourselves with a community and a group that we are not part of. If we are not someone who has to eat animals to survive, then we can’t appropriate their situation to justify why we choose to unnecessarily exploit and harm animals. It’s not about them, it’s about us and the choices that we can make. Eating animal products can also actively harm Indigenous people. For example, animal farming is the number one cause of deforestation and habitat loss globally, including in South America. Not to mention the impact that the climate crisis has on Indigenous communities all around the world, meaning that veganism can directly benefit Indigenous people because a plant-based diet is the most sustainable diet we can eat. The full debate is on my channel and is titled ‘Student confronts vegan about indigenous culture’.

vegans like to criticize the consumption of animals but won't bat an eye when eating imported trendy foods that displaced humans and animals to grow

Animals eat other animals. This is biology. The world evolved to work that way. The energy from one life fuels another. If you want to talk about how modern farming practices are bad for the environment and society i feel you, but humans are omnivores and thats not immoral in and of itself.

As someone who grew up in a farming family, we are not your enemy. Industrial farming is ruining all of us. Vegans have the right idea but they are attacking the wrong people

The thing vegans don’t understand is that most of us don’t care that’s the animals are killed. I’d prefer it if they weren’t tortured and held in horrible conditions but I’m fine with food being killed so that we can consume it.

It’s frustrating because oftentimes those same people just use indigenous people as part of an argument against veganism. They don’t advocate for indigenous communities nor do they advocate against colonialism

I dont get why people have such a hard time admitting it is the better thing to do. They just refuse to admit they aren't a morally perfect person.

i’ve been vegetarian for 14 years, and my biggest issue is the meat industry. if we took an approach that was more similar to indigenous practices (using the whole of one animal for multiple purposes) then that would be a massive improvement. humans have always eaten meat and there are humans who will always need to eat meat, it’s not possible to completely eradicate meat eating but we can change how the industry runs itself.

I eat meat, i don't think people should use loopholes like indigenous cultures thousands of miles away from them to justify it. I eat meat because my enjoyment of eating meat overrides my sympathy towards animals, i dont think anyone should sugar coat and i think vegans have a right to think im a bad person. I do believe that people eat too much meat and we should shift to alternative sources like insects and lab grown meat

Every method of harvesting food kills animals. Combines kill as many wild creatures as a slaughterhouse kills ones raised for the purpose.

if we do ethical ranching then the animal lived a good life, was killed quickly&humanely, and we utilize every piece of it so its death is not wasted… there is nothing wrong with eating meat, most ppl need it to survive and live a long life with less health complications

coconut milk is £1.80 vs £1.35 for cows milk.6 eggs cost £.35 from m&s vs £3 for vegan eggs. Bread costs 75 for supermarket brand vs 2.20. Some people just can’t afford to be vegan 🤷🏼‍♀️

But there are indigenous people that have access to supermarkets isn’t like they’re completely isolated and they have no access to food anymore. so why aren’t you talking to them about it as well? it’s so tied to their culture it isn’t just about access.

the issue is not eating animals or eating plants, its OVERCONSUMPTION. We have MORE than enough food for everyone, but we throw it out rather than feeding the poor. we over harvest, plant and animal. populations AND ecosystems and habitats devastated for almonds, for quinoa. No one thing is better than the other. everyone being vegan would be just as harmful as everyone eating only meats. nevermind that the human body is designed to process both and benefits from both. you're not getting good omega-3s without fish
