@maisonrickie: Today, we talk about linguistic habitus, or how the way you speak says a lot more about you than you could imagine. Conscious or subconscious, this matters. Realizing your words convey much more meaning than just the message itself. On a personal note, I’ve been in NYC the past ~2 weeks and I ended up getting snowed in twice because of a major snowstorm. Luckily, I have travel insurance through my credit cards but what I didn’t have was a pair of boots. So I was navigating 10 inches of snow with just my trainers 😅 More content to come soon, and not just short form video! Keep an eye out on the page for new developments and I hope to see you in the next one. Comment below with your thoughts! Hope you enjoyed 🙏

This is literally the reason why Philosophy started in Greece. They had the economic possibility to foster deep thinkers where philosophers did not have to work farms every day and struggle for survival. Almost every great philosopher since then has had immense privilege to sit and think for years. Obviously, there are the few exceptions throughout history.

I think that you're speaking about an educated class over a wealthy class. that is not necessarily the most important indicator of class anymore. succession is a great indicator of this, wealth comes without education in a capitalist system

I think that elaborated discourse sounds like trying too hard and new rich, truly sophisticated people talk in simpler and understandable ways. it is is like in academia, people who truly understand a concept explain it simply, those who don't use complex jargon to try to impress

People think upper class is “out of touch”, yes out of touch with survival mode & scarcity mindset. This is what life used to be.

So to summarize the 3 points you made that separates the upper class is, 1 that they have free time that isn’t escape but genuinely free time away from the pressure of work. 2 that their kids or they grew up in the culture and absorbed it not through the outside spectator view but by literally experiencing it on their own through family trips and museum visits, and 3 that they are so financially secure that they have extra money that they can spend on vacations and trips that would put the average person in worry about their finances. They are free from this worry and can just about go and do anything they want.

these perceptions are socially constructed, not inherent truths. The way someone speaks doesn’t make them smarter or more valuable as a person.
