Some people think real men don’t show emotion. Others think hog dog hunters are cold-hearted and that when a good dog dies, it’s just “another hunting dog.” The truth is, those dogs are family. This video is from August 2022 when I buried one of the best dogs I’ve ever owned, Shrimp. After I dug the hole, wrapped him up, and said my final goodbye, something happened that I’ll never forget. Shrimp’s daddy, Blitz, who was 10 years old and already retired from hog hunting, slowly walked over to the grave and started pushing dirt onto his son with his nose. I’ve been around dogs my whole life, and I’ve never witnessed anything like it before or since. People can say dogs don’t understand loss or don’t have emotions, but standing there that day, I knew better. These dogs form bonds in the woods that most people will never understand. They fight side by side, trust each other with their lives, and they know when one of their own is gone. I broke down and cried like a baby watching Blitz do that. It was one of the saddest moments I’ve ever experienced, but at the same time, one of the most powerful. The older I get, the less I worry about what people think of showing emotion. Loving your dogs and grieving them doesn’t make you weak, it means they earned a place in your heart. Rest easy, Shrimp. And thank you, Blitz, for reminding me that loyalty, love, and respect aren’t traits only found in people.
