This and Fairphone will go the way of Project Ara because of the comments here.
To be profitable, they have to be more expensive because "average" people don't appreciate the concept and therefore quantity can't be a metric for profit.
These will never get out of proof of concept stage because profit is king and an open-source system with many suppliers for components is the only way it could work.

problem is, none of this is a "standard" adopted across the industry. so youre at the mercy of the company's survival and ethics.

Let say the framework cost 3k and last 10 years.
Why not spend 1.5k and buy a laptop that last 5 years. After that spend another 1.5 for another laptop to last 5 years. Surely this will work way better than buying the framework. Not hating on it but at those price, you can literally buy 2 or 3 different laptops at with the same performance

The full laptop with memory and hard drives reached $3k, for an rtx5070 on a Ryzen 7 350 processor, that's really bad. Can get those specs for literally half the price in a lighter and tightly built shock resistant package, and so I don't benefit from the swappability.

the cost plus shipping and tax isn't worth... you can get better and for half of it 👌

This thing is expensive af, even the modular hardware is expensive. You better off buying any other good laptop for 5yrs and replacing it with newer one afterwards.

my only complaint with frameworks are the price, they're so expensive 😭

Its modularity is useless since the modules come from one provider (the manufacturer) and they are non-standard.

who needs a swappable keyboard? or trackpad? how often do you break your keyboards. also you still need to buy these modules from the same manufacturer. and if they go discontinued? and what if you break some latch in process of swapping your 10th keyboard? all of theese is absolutely unnecessary. we just need REPEAIRABLE laptops. not hot swappable

thinkpads used to have some of this modularity as well! I remember replacing DVD tray module with an extra battery in my T420

The fact that we had to reach 2026 for something that could be the "new" tech easily 10years ago disappoints me a lot. Was about time!

Tech gadgets are neat, but I don’t want to waste any of my time doing this or other support activities in my spare time. There’s also no market for 3rd party parts. I can’t even source a reliable battery for a 10yo MBP, and several million of those were sold.

How is the GPU "upgradable" if the 8GB 5070 is the only RTX GPU they provide?? The other two GPU modules they sell are also 8GB mediocre AMD GPUs. Buying those is a downgrade, not an upgrade.
