@breathe_history: The Battle of Towton, fought on 29 March 1461, was the largest and most brutal battle of the Wars of the Roses. It took place in a snowstorm near Towton, Yorkshire, between the Yorkist forces of Edward, Earl of March, and the Lancastrian army loyal to Henry VI. Fierce winds favoured the Yorkist archers, whose arrows flew further, devastating the advancing Lancastrians before close combat began. The fighting lasted for hours, descending into brutal hand-to-hand fighting as both sides struggled for ground. A Lancastrian collapse during retreat led to mass losses, securing Edward IV’s throne and ending serious Lancastrian resistance for years. #History
