Sherri Rasmussen, a 29-year-old newlywed and nursing director, was found beaten and shot to death in her apartment in 1986. The LAPD originally believed it was a burglary gone wrong. But the case went cold for over 20 years-until DNA evidence cracked it wide open. In 2009, DNA from a bite mark at the crime scene matched a female-unusual in cases thought to be male-driven burglaries. The DNA led investigators to Stephanie Lazarus, an LAPD detective and ex-girlfriend of Sherri's husband, John. Lazarus had inserted herself into the investigation in 1986 and was never seriously considered a suspect, possibly due to her position on the force. She had even taunted Sherri in the months before her death, warning her to back off from John. Lazarus was arrested in 2009 at her workplace-still an officer at LAPD.
