I’ve lived in Scotland for almost 9 years and I’ve never gotten used to people bringing up horrible things happening in the US to me in such detached, unfeeling ways. It’s always “bet you’re glad to be out of there” with no acknowledgment that it’s still my home and I still have people I love living there.

My whole family is in Minneapolis. That’s my home. We hung a Minnesota flag outside our flat in London this week 😭

I feel survivors guilt? I left in 2023 bc I was worried about the 2024 election. I feel like Cassandra. I was right. I was told I was overreacting, but I was right and I hate it.

American in England. I too feel helpless. And this is all consuming me. And no one, unless they’re American, will understand.

It’s also when people constantly make comments about “and what about what’s going on in your country” and you never know how/why they’re asking or how much info they actually have

I'm in Iceland. Born and raised in Minnesota. Seeing my home on the news here is devastating. Been feeling immense dread since Nov. 2024. I am lucky to be far removed from it physically, but emotionally I'm a mess.

In Ireland - it’s really rough. You always feel on having this conversation with everyone when it’s already difficult being an American abroad. Always terrified about what I’m going to wake up to daily. That said I unfortunately look like I have to move back due to redundancy and I have so many mixed feelings at the moment.

American in scotland who left in 2021 for school not for politics, I feel like I somehow, completely accidentally, wandered onto the last lifeboat on the titanic and now i have to sit warm and dry watching my friends and family who are still there experience horrors beyond my comprehension 🙃

First time you’ve come across my FYP - as an American living in Ireland, so much yes. What are we supposed to say when people ask how we’re doing? Physically I’m safe, and very grateful for that. Mentally and emotionally, I’m a damn wreck who cries every day, can’t sleep, and has to constantly remind herself not to mainline the news.

I’m only a few weeks into my new life in the Netherlands and I feel guilty that even though I am watching and worrying, my mental health is lighter.

Appreciate your content as always. As an American, this fight is yours too no matter where you live. 💗 TBH, as a human being, this fight is all of ours. For those condemning protestors, I’d encourage you to wake TFU. We are doing everything we can to stop this, including putting our lives on the line in ways you may not understand, but this isn’t a rebellious tantrum. We’re fighting for freedom for all of us.

All of this. I feel like Cassandra. I warned everyone I knew who was going to vote for trump and they didnt listen. I'm broken. I'm so sad and so upset. I feel all of this. I'm in the UK. And I am scared.

I feel the same. There’s this mix of anger, embarrassment, relief and gratitude (not to be there with my kids), guilt and helplessness. And yes, the TV show thing that some locals have is hard to deal with at times, too. Because as messed up as it may be at times, the US is still home. 💙
