Georges Seurat's debut with Pointillism in 1886 generated a wave of negative criticism in the avant-garde art scene. Many artists who had started with Impressionism, such as Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin, paved the way for a younger generation who developed new styles that emphasized emotions, ideas, and personal expression over purely optical impressions. Unnatural colors, exaggerated forms, and symbolic themes are some of the hallmarks of the work of the artists we now call "Post-Impressionists." Although some aspects of his theories and lifestyle are controversial, Gauguin was instrumental in this shift. His goal was to restore authenticity to art, setting aside Western pictorial conventions such as modeling and linear perspective. He left Paris in search of "uncultivated" subjects, first in the most remote regions of France and later in countries that were French colonies, thus embodying the "primitive" quality he sought in his works. Van Gogh, Emile Bernard, and Paul Sérusier are some of the artists who followed in his footsteps. The synthetic style Gauguin developed with Bernard, which emphasized the role of memory, imagination, and abstraction, would have a profound impact on Van Gogh and the young group of artists who, in the late 1880s, called themselves "Les Nabis" or "The Prophets." The latter embraced the subversive concept that a painting was nothing more than a decorative arrangement of colors on a flat surface.
