nothing wrong with buying books... but owning 1000 books of which 600-700 are unread most definitely is overconsumption 😅

Buying the books you read, no problem but buying 30 editions of the same book? Absolutely overconsumption

You’re missing the point. In a nutshell, overconsumption is having more of something you need; eg. books, makeup, toys, pens. And Booktok is full of it. Digitalisation and the exploitation of companies to their customers is a very different issue, but you’ve labelled it as something completely different.

if everything was digital, it would be so easy to ban books from everyone

Hello :
It’s over consumption when people buy multiple copies of the same books. Some times even I languages they don’t speak just because the cover is pretty

Overconsumption is a problem when it's single use things and things that expire that you could never conceivably use up. Books do not expire and can be read again and again

It’s overconsumption when people aren’t reading the books they buy, when they buy multiple copies of the same book, when they have trophy books. There is a HUGE overconsumption problem in the book community and it shouldn’t be excused so easily, yall are still hurting our environment

I think what they mean is when people buy stacks and stacks of books that they end up not reading or buying or buying every single edition of the same book

Also its supporting the author and artists who designed the cover art, meaning they can earn a livelihood from it, meaning they have more time to make more of it!

I think it might be considered overcomsumption if they purchased the same book multiple times 😬

I want a physical book. IF I use a digital, I buy a paperback/hardcover as a trophy.

People have always had shelves on shelves of books for centuries. Private libraries existed way before digital media, this isn’t some new Gen Z overconsumption thing. Reading has always involved owning multiple books. Why are people failing to understand that

We are not talking about books period when we say that, we’re talking about buying books in excess to never read it

I use the library for both physical and digital books, buy used books and new books and buy ebooks and I STILL don’t believe you can “overconsume” books.

I usually listen to audiobooks and then if I like it enough I buy a physical copy so I can reread it in the future. That works best for me

My brother collects lego, games, stamps, figurines, ... his room is filled to the brim with stuff. Not once did someone say his hobby of collecting is overconsumption. Why is that?

yes library exist but unless you live in a big city most of them have only thrillers or romance that have all the same plot, so if you like something else you have to buy them
