@jonjon.jpeg: Road safety works best when design forces the right behavior, not when sign begs for it. Road safety works best when design forces the right behavior, not when sign begs for it. Don Norman, in The Design of Everyday Things, calls these forcing functions: design elements that make the wrong behavior difficult or impossible. Instead of relying on perfect attention, they guide behavior by default. This approach is standard in software, web, and product design. When the stakes are high, we design systems that anticipate mistakes. Streets should be treated the same way. Safer roads come from design that makes safety unavoidable, not signs that hope people comply. #uxui #carculture #donnorman #design

The design of that sign is traffic ticket revenue, not safety.

In my province, you would have a flashing light with a sign that says “30km/hr when flashing”

these signs should be digital. They should turn on and flash when the school zone speed limit is in effect.

That is awful design, or a tokenistic sign to make it look like the local government are doing something about speeding without actually doing anything about speeding. Here we have traffic calming structures on the roads around schools. Sometimes we have "20mph when lights flashing sign" with flashing lights for start/end of school or simple digital speed signs that change at different times of days and weather (rain and stopping distance).

In germany at least, these signs have a single time slot, eg. Mo-Fr 7:00-17:00. It’s valid year round, even on holidays. Simple, concise, and printed large enough to read

America has a thing for written signs, in Denmark it is way less information. maybe they should use a electric sign

"we don't so that", no, we do, in civilized countries in Europe that's normal design. The problem is us is a third world country cosplaying as civilization

What's with those 5min things? Why not just round it to 30min to make it easier to process. And also, just use digital signs that change depending on the situation.

In my province in Canada, school zones went from “ school hours” on school days, to dawn to dusk, to all day every day… not only is it easier to remember but understanding that schools have things the kids like to use outside of school hours like basketball, hoops, and playing fields and playgrounds… why wouldn’t we drive accordingly just like in a park or playground zone?

Our equivalent in the UK is "20 when lights flash" if the lights aren't flashing the previous limit applies (usually 30). Much better UX.

But yes, as a graphic designer this hurts my eyes. It also reminds me of learning the difference between official vs unofficial language while in design school. Psychologically, people dismiss signs when they say “please slow down” vs when they demand it “SLOW DOWN”

Maybe you are asking the wrong question. What if the intent isn't to slow people down, but instead to catch someone in a speed trap to boost local government funding? Given that perspective, that design is excellent.

in the UK we just have some flashing lights on the sign, if they flash, it's a 20, otherwise whatever the previous posted speed limit - seems a lot easier than whatever the hell this is
