@keds_economist: I get asked a lot about #tradwife and my answer is that we don’t talk about #divorce #singlemom and the #economicinsecurity #sahm face.
Oh man, such a #millennialpause to start this off, meant to edit it out but forgot to!!! 🤦🏻♀️

My mom was a single parent and a paralegal; the biggest piece of life advice I got from her was to secure my economic independence and never let a man take it from me.

And also that trad wife influencers are… being paid for their labor (great! I think everyone should be paid for their labor) but advocating that others shouldn’t, which raises some real questions

I was a tradwife for a while. We made the decision for me to stay home with my kids until they started school and I was blessed to be able to do that. In the back of my mind, I always felt a little uncomfortable about being dependent and as soon as the kids were in school, I went back to work. Feminism is about having options IMO. Also all the things you mentioned about investing in children I 💯 agree with.

I was a SAHM for 13 years and it was a huge mistake. I was back in the workforce for 7 years (and divorced for 4) before I reached the same amount of money in real dollars that I was making when I left the workforce. In adjusted dollars I'm still not at parity after 12 years back.

As a "trad wife" I can say it's dangerous. We also are likely to lose healthcare. What we decided to do for our kids to become functional productive adults is trade our own ability to do the same. No one laid out what exactly I was risking when I was deciding between daycare and sahm life.

Aside from all of this a SAHM is missing out on the most vital years of retirement accumulation. The earlier money is invested the greater the return at retirement.

I work at a very expensive private school and we're seeing fewer SAHMs with younger families. I think they saw older women waste their degrees and careers to be left for a younger model or be stuck with a worse career once the kids grew up.

All of the risk falls on the trad partner. You don’t divorce the person you married.

And sometimes it’s not divorced, it’s widowhood. And the economy/job market treats you old if you are 50. All you are saying is true.

Love this take, but also want to add that divorce is not the only risk to SAHMs. Death of a spouse can leave you in the same position and life insurance can help but is usually not enough that you would not need to work again, especially with the cost of healthcare in the US.

💯💯💯. I am a stay-at-home wife who carefully planned this. Did not exit workforce until 40. I have money which is separate from my husband.

I stumbled upon your content, and I love it. It is as if you were reading my mind and expressing all of my ideas. You're brilliant! And it's evident that you speak out of love. Hopefully, the world can conform to that fact, learn from you, and adapt your ideas before it's too late. May the true God bless all your efforts. keep it up 💯

I cannot overstate how refreshing I find your takes. Particularly, here, with how you integrated the realities of (current) family law jurisprudence and the vagaries of the actual labor market. Thank you for reframing the conversation in such a thoughtful way.

i remember the first time you talked about it and it stuck with me so much. that are labor market is so cruel it does not have options or protections for part-time high paid work. My wife now currently faces that struggle.

Did you know that stay at home mom's that earn no income outside of the home don't qualify for medicare. my mother has been SAHM her whole life and my dad retired and she doesn't qualify for medicare, because she doesn't have enough credits.

I would tell all young ladies getting married, have your own money. There’s nothing wrong with being a SHM. If things go south, you might have a hard time supporting yourself with no work history.

I am staying home with my baby for a true maternity leave of a year and plan to go back into the workforce after. We shouldn’t have to choose job of a real maternity leave. 12 weeks is a joke. However I built a career for 15 years and have a bachelors degree. I think it’s a

I made more money than my ex husband (thank God). I was able to raise my daughter well with the help of my parents. No help from the ex whatsoever. I always advise young women to ensure their own income. You must be able to provide for yourself.
