It’s never good when your PhD-level inspector looks at you and tells you that she has never written that a house needs to come down to the foundation until yours. I will not lie to you or try to put a positive spin on everything: this has been hard. Really hard. Ben and I have been more stressed than we have ever been. Any yet, we will be okay. I don’t know what comes next. I don’t know how exactly we climb out of this, but the gift is that we have the ability to try. I get to wake up and kiss my family. I get to dance with my dogs. I get to dream and try again. I am open to magic and trust that something good is coming. I just gotta keep showing up, trying to stay open, and finding the good that is here. We need MUCH better laws and education around mold. I am trying really hard to connect with my state senator @jenniferboysko to change some of that. I have also had to learn the hard way some of the ways that we can be more empowered when we buy or rent, so a big part of why I want to talk about this is to prevent it from happening to somebody else. I personally think that long vacancies in houses (even while the home is owned) should be disclosed and trigger some extra checks if it’s flipped. I was actually weary of flips when we bought the house, but the inspector said everything looked really good. We also didn’t buy the house from the flipper. Someone else lived there for 8 months and sold it to us (the reason given was that they wanted to go back to the city). We have talked to lawyers, which in and of itself became an expensive endeavor. Some would barely even talk to me. One that did charged me $5k for absolutely nothing. Another said he’d likely take the case but it costs a lot of money to pay for experts etc. And I’ve talked to a lot of folks who have sued who have said not to do it. We have a little more time to decide, but right now, it seems too risky to spend money when so much of it is flying out the door. I am an open book, so feel free to ask anything. (All my opinion & memory)
