Do you take a 50L backpack and a suitcase or is that basically your suitcase and then you have a separate day to day bag for backpacking?

I’m planning on bringing an 85L backpack but not fill it up (around 50L worth of stuff) so that I can bring back gifts and souvenirs! Is that silly?
