GEN MKHWANAZI IS NOT GOING TO TAKE THE HEAD OF HAWKS POSITION‼️‼️‼️ So Mr Chipmunk please stop with your agenda🤬 KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has publicly ruled himself out of contention for the position of National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, saying he will not apply for the vacant post despite efforts by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to secure Cabinet approval for his appointment. Cachalia has submitted a Cabinet memorandum seeking concurrence for Mkhwanazi’s appointment in terms of Section 17CA(1) to (3) of the South African Police Service Act. If Cabinet approves the recommendation, the appointment must be formally reported to Parliament. The position has been vacant since the retirement of former Hawks head Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya in May 2025, with Lieutenant-General Siphesihle Nkosi serving in an acting capacity. Mkhwanazi dismissed speculation that he wanted to move into the national position, explaining that he had reached the highest salary notch in his current rank and had no intention of pursuing another post within the SAPS hierarchy. He said his policing career had always centred on operational law enforcement rather than detective work. “Not because of arrogance or whatever, but I can certainly tell you that I believe I’m the oldest or the longest-serving lieutenant-general in the set-up of the South African Police Service. And I’m in the highest notch of this level that I’m in. I cannot get any promotion beyond what I have,” Mkhwanazi said. He explained that he deliberately chose specialised operational units when he joined the police, including the Public Order Police Unit and later the Special Task Force, because he wanted to confront criminals directly. “I never wanted to be a detective specifically because I wanted to be involved with the real action that is a combination of investigation and combating crime,” he said. Mkhwanazi also criticised reports portraying him as someone seeking the Hawks leadership role, saying they did not reflect his intentions. He publicly assured other officers interested in applying for the position that he would not submit an application. “I’ll say in front of the public and to the colleagues that are within the South African Police Service who are interested to apply for the post that they must feel free that I will never submit an application for the post of DPCI,” he said. The KwaZulu-Natal commissioner said he intended to remain in his current position until his contract ends, which he indicated has approximately one year remaining. He said he would focus on completing his responsibilities in the province before retiring from the role. SOURCE Crime Connect
