As a society we messed up by making housing an investment mechanism rather than a public utility.

Nothing wrong with apartments. The U.S. has sprawled too much. Everyone having a single family house isn’t realistic. The problem is that apartments are too expensive

I’m 36 with a fully paid off house and car. I make 55,000 a year and live by myself. Don’t go above your means and don’t try to keep up with the Jones’s.

We need more affordable housing. We need universal healthcare. We need a universal basic income for everyone. We need caps on home prices. We need caps on big companies buying homes.

I’m 26 and bought a house 20 minutes outside of Indianapolis. Yeah- it’s a smaller 2 bedroom home, but it’s a start. People need to look for starter homes NOT 3k sq ft houses

Getting married in 9 months, we both live at home with our parents, and home ownership is just not in the cards for us anytime soon 🥲

Gen X is tired of seeing house prices increase arbitrarily to maintain ridiculous taxation. It can all drop 80%

The issue is we have way to much unnecessary regulation regarding housing and housing construction, which artificially deflates housing supply.

Capitalism will always lead to the commodification basic needs. The profit incentive will only drive up prices. You can’t fix this without major systemic changes.

Not so fast. Driving property values down would hurt millions of people. They would end up underwater on their home, which would bankrupt them. If anything, wages need to go up and home values need to rise steadily at like 2-4% per year.

I’m a manager at a small service company. I make “manager pay” but can’t afford anything. Not even a mobile home. I need multiple incomes to even afford a crap condo but I wouldn’t be there since I’ll be working

Gen X here. I would gladly sacrifice half my homes value so I could afford to move into a nicer home and a younger person could buy my home. The risen value does nothing for me when I cant afford to upgrade.

What’s wrong with living at home? I have a high income and I get to save so much versus wasting 3k a month in rent

It’s because the argument isn’t Socialism VS Capitalism and people don’t understand that. We don’t live in a capitalist country. Government regulations, Intervention, and Subsidies have absolutely abolished pure market forces. No one would be suffering if the government didn’t tamper out the market. We need a little regulation, yet we have a ton.

Free markets are supposed to expand access, improve quality and lower cost. With the exception of flat screen tvs where does the US’s system achieve this?
