@byjacklynn: I experienced mainland Greece on a group tour with @Trafalgar Travel that shattered the idea that this part of the country is “worth skipping.” While many people say to rush past Athens and head straight to the islands, mainland Greece is overflowing with ancient history, powerful stories, breathtaking landscapes, and extraordinary craftsmanship. [Ad] With Trafalgar, I walked the sacred path to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, following in the footsteps of Alexander the Great and Emperor Hadrian as they once sought guidance from the Oracle. I ran through the ancient stadium at Olympia, where the Olympic Games began over 2,000 years ago. I watched the sun rise over the monasteries of Meteora and beneath the Lion Gate of Mycenae, surrounded by monumental beehive tombs, the legends of Homer felt suddenly real. Mainland Greece isn’t something to skip - it’s something to experience - and right so you can do just that for less with Trafalgar’s Big Travel Sale, offering up to 15% off tours worldwide. #History #historytok #ancientgreece

I'm currently replaying Assassin's Creed Odyssey which is set during the Pelopennesian War (431-422 BCE) and the amount of work that went into recreating the all the cities, temples, and people...ahh it's just so beautiful and makes me want to visit in person to learn more about Ancient Greece 🩵

Concerning the Olympics at the time and it's retrictions on women. When I visited Greece, we were told that a woman once entered the stands desguised as a man to see her son perform and won. She was discovered and shown clemency, because apparently, not only her son just became an olympian, but her husband and her father were also in their time.

next time you should go to the Dodoni oracle where it is said that the oracle gave her answer by reading the leaves of an oak tree and there in the middle of the place where she was stands an oak tree today!

Just seeing the Oracle of Delphi's home in photos gives me chills. One day I will walk the steps and prostrate myself before her tripod and thank her, thank her predecessors, for their devotion and their existence, their contributions, their knowledge. Δόξα τον Απόλλωνα, ύμνο Θανάτο, ύμνο Εκάτη

Thanks for sharing. I was recently at the beehive tomb, the Acropolis of Mycenae, and also ran 😂 in the ancient stadium at Olympia. I agree with your comments about these sites.

In case you didn’t know: women also had their own equivalent of the Olympics from at least as far back as the 6th century BC! It was held in honor of Hera, the goddess of women, queenship, and marriage. It also occurred every 4 years, but at a different date from the male Olympics. 16 married women from 16 different cities would arrange the event as well as weave a single dress for the goddess (this was either left out for her on a throne or draped over one of her statues), and unmarried girls of three different age groups would participate. The games exclusively involved racing, and the victor would have her likeness made in statuary (with her name carved in) which would then be prominently displayed in the temple of Hera in the girl’s hometown. The distinctive look of a participant was loose uncovered hair and a short dress with one breast exposed. Here is an example:
