Beneath them passed magistrates, merchants, priests, and citizens moving between temples, markets, and public buildings. What survives is not grandeur alone, but planning: raised pavements to avoid flooding, deep ruts worn by cart wheels, and architectural rhythms designed for crowds and processions. The columns are truncated now, their upper sections lost to collapse and later stone-robbing, yet their spacing still maps the order of Roman urban life.
