Cool technique but historically inaccurate. Halftone printing was used for images, not text; the letters of a newspaper would have been printed with a different method.

I had to work with these, it's still common practice in cardboard packaging. because the surface is a bit bumpy you need a soft stamp to print on it, problem with a stamp is limit number of colors and almost no blending. using these dots we could create gradients and mix colors in a way most users would never realise

They aren’t actually a relic of screen printing methods (although you also use halftones in screen printing), newspapers have never been printed using screen printing as the meshes aren’t fine enough. Newspapers were printed with different lithographic methods (first stone and then plate, i.e offset lithography), which are able to provide much finer details.
