On a test you would get marked down for sitting in the left lane for not using all available road. Why people queue like this I’ll never know, the lane is there to be used it’s not for decoration.

either way its the same amount of traffic. for you, you skipped all those cars and made it quicker. if everyone did the same then the merge point would be congested and the time spent waiting would be the same as just waiting at the back

It's in the highway code, there's road signs instructing you to do it. Neither of these things would be true if it was unsafe or against the rules.

He is correct in using lane 2. Unfortunately most driver's, do not know the Highway Code, or how to drive correctly and efficiently.
