QīXī（七夕）wasn’t originally just about finding love. It was also about becoming capable. This is one of my favorite — and often overlooked — parts of the history of QīXī（七夕）. Long before it became widely known as “Chinese Valentine’s Day,” QīXī（七夕）was also celebrated as QǐQiǎo （乞巧） Festival — the Festival of Pleading for Skills. Traditionally, young women would honor ZhīNǚ（织女） - the Weaver Girl, and take part in customs such as needlework competitions and “pleading for skills,” hoping for dexterity, wisdom and good fortune. So the festival wasn’t simply asking: “Who will love me?” It was also asking: “What kind of person can I become?” And I find that surprisingly modern. We live in a culture that constantly tells us to search for someone: Find the right person. Find your soulmate. Find someone who understands you. There is nothing wrong with wanting love. But perhaps there is another question worth asking first: Am I becoming someone capable of building the kind of life — and the kind of relationship — I actually want? Love can enrich a life. But curiosity, capability, independence, wisdom and purpose give us a life of our own to bring into that relationship. Perhaps that is one of the most beautiful things an ancient festival can still teach us today: Before asking who will love me, what kind of person am I becoming? #Qixi #ChineseCulture #Love #selfgrowth #Qiqiao
