Wuthering Heights is a "domestic gothic" novel about an utterly dysfunctional family of awful people being terrible towards and for each other. It's all about obsession and revenge. It's not a romance, not even with "dark" added in front. It's "romantic" the way Frankenstein is: sublime nature, obsession, death.

Nelly messes with so many characters, she’s the cause of half the drama. Example - she knows Heathcliff is in the room when Cathy goes into her whole speil about how she can’t marry him. Nelly never once warns Cathy that Heathcliff can hear her. And then acts shocked when he runs away

Nelly: villain or over worked house keeper. Cathy Heathcliff and Hendley- all awful children. Nelly was ALWAYS put in the middle. Always the bridge between both homes. She basically kiled Cathy and isn’t likable but a villain? Not so sure. I think every single character is a villain, thus the genius of Emily. Literally the only book I’ve ever read or known of where every single character is an antihero. What a crazy thing to pull off for an author.

Thank you for saying he’s not white. As a black human who loved this book, it’s become exhausting, saying this and arguing. I don’t even have it in me anymore so I really appreciate when palm colored women that appreciate literature have our backs when it comes to literary discussion.

I wonder why his race is never expressed clearly in the book. Is it an unknown because it would have been considered too risqué for publication at the time? Or is it unknown because within the world if the story it is literally unknown in that he appears racially ambiguous. I had always thought he was maybe Romani/Gypsy born, who would have received prejudice at that time. That very ambiguity however gave modern Hollywood a lot of casting opportunity that could have been explored.
