This just goes to show you the horrible job that the Louvre has done to conserve Leonardo’s work. Theirs is dirty, washed out and and in very bad condition

Ooh. Fun fact: I put both of these side by side in a single image on my phone with the Prado on the left. I did this after seeing a documentary. If I put my phone up to my nose and slowly pulled it away so my eyes turned it in to 3 images, the center image looks 3D!

I highly doubt it was for a 3D effect. When you have someone pose for a drawing or painting, the artists surround them. The model is often on a dais or raised platform, with the artists in an arc. This makes everyone’s perspective slightly different and the end results would be similar, but not identical. Most likely Di Vinci had multiple students and he was in the center, but further back, so he could observe their work.

years ago I bought a book called The Life and Works of Leonardo Da Vinci by Ormiston and it has several versions of The Mona Lisa painted by his students, the surviving works at least. it was so refreshing to see the painting in such detail
