One of the things I love about being a follower of Christ is that I don’t have to stop enjoying the stories, characters, games, anime,, and fictional worlds that I’ve always loved. Instead, be wise in what I feed my spirit and what portals I allow to be opened into my life. Not everything is good for us even if it’s appealing to the eye. Looking at themes though through what Christ allows me to like and love and the lens of my faith, I recognize themes that remind me of something far greater than fiction. One scene asks Bruce: “Why build yourself?” Bruce responds: “I’m not meant to die in here.” And the response comes: “Here, there, what’s the difference?” Another scene asks: “What will you do?” Bruce answers: “Rebuild it. Just the way it was. Brick for brick.” Then comes the simple question: “What does that mean?” “Rise.” And finally, Bane asks: “I broke you. How have you come back?” Those words hit differently when you look at them through the lens of the Gospel. Scripture repeatedly speaks about falling and rising, brokenness and restoration, death and life, destruction and rebuilding. Batman is a fictional character, but the imagery in these scenes reminds me of something very real: God specializes in bringing life out of places that look completely dead. Bruce Wayne is a man shaped by tragedy, loss, and a broken heart, yet he refuses to simply let the darkness consume him. He dedicates his life to protecting others, standing against evil, seeking justice, and refusing to become the very thing he hates. There’s something powerful about that, especially when Scripture says: “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21 Even Batman’s refusal to take a life can remind us that human life has value because every person is made in the image of God. “So God created man in his own image…” — Genesis 1:27 But Batman’s story also makes me think about something much deeper: identity. Bruce spends his life becoming Batman, believing that through his own strength, discipline, determination, and sacrifice, he can save Gotham. And yet, this is where the Gospel gives us something Batman never could: We don’t have to become strong enough to save ourselves. We don’t have to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. We don’t have to earn our salvation through our works or our own righteousness. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9 Bruce Wayne is a fictional man who experienced unimaginable loss and tried to turn his pain into a mission. But the Gospel tells us that God doesn’t tell the brokenhearted, “Make yourself strong enough.”He tells us: “The LORD is nigh unto them that be of a broken heart.” — Psalm 34:18 There are moments in our lives when we feel like we’ve been buried beneath our failures, our pain, our past, our mistakes, our fears, or the things that have tried to break us. Sometimes we wonder: “How could I possibly rebuild from this?” But the Gospel doesn’t tell us that we have to rebuild ourselves through our own strength. It tells us that Christ makes us new. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 And that word “rise” carries a meaning that goes far beyond Batman. Jesus Christ didn’t simply survive suffering. He died. He was buried. And He rose again. “He is not here, but is risen.” — Luke 24:6 That’s the difference between a fictional hero and the Gospel.
