@jess_happy_smallholding: What’s better, direct sowing or indirect sowing? Direct sowing is where you sow your seeds exactly where the plants are to grow. Indirect sowing is where you sow your seeds into pots or module trays first, and transplant your plants to their final growing position later. 🌱 Benefits of direct sowing 🌱 🪴 No additional materials needed e.g. pots and compost. 🪴 Save time - plants are only handled once at the point at which you sow your seeds. 🪴 Some seeds need to be sown direct. Carrots are a good example of this: their long tap roots can be broken if they are moved. 🌱 Benefits of indirect sowing 🌱 🪴 Protect seeds young plants from pets by keeping them out of harms way. 🪴 Extending the growing season. Seeds can be sowing earlier in pots in the house or greenhouse. This means you can sow your seeds earlier than if you were sowing direct outside, bringing forward your harvests and increasing your yield overall for the year. 🪴 Optimise your growing space. You can grow plants on in pots while you wait for crops in your outdoor beds to be finished. This way, by the time you remove a finished crop from a bed you’ll have seedling that are a few weeks old to plant out rather than sowing seeds. This brings forward your harvest of your next crop, maximising your annual yield from one bed. #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden

It’s tempting to start really early but I’m worried if I sow now I’ll end up with plants ready to go out by February that can’t really go out until May due to frost. So you end up with about 10 weeks looking after plants that you started too early
