When we first arrived at Hanoi Train Street, we honestly didn’t expect any problems. We walked to one of the stair entrances and there was already a group of people standing there blocking the way. They were literally acting like a barrier and wouldn’t let anyone pass. I politely asked if we could go through, but my words were completely ignored. Instead of answering, they immediately started asking if we wanted to sit in their bar or restaurant. The idea is simple. They try to lead you straight into a specific place and make you sit there. The situation felt pretty uncomfortable because they simply wouldn’t let us walk down the street unless we agreed to sit in their café. One important thing to know is that Train Street is free to enter. No one has the right to charge money just for walking onto the street. So if someone asks you to pay for a ticket or an entrance fee, you can simply say no. At another entrance we even saw people trying to collect money from tourists just to enter the street. We didn’t argue or create a scene. We just walked away and found another way in. The easiest entrance is actually from the main road in the middle of Train Street. There are usually movable barriers for cars, but pedestrians can walk in freely. From there you can explore both sides of the street and choose any café you like. One more thing to know. When the train is about to arrive, if you are not sitting in a café they usually ask people to leave the street completely.
