Including trademark proceedings. So I’m not surprised BookTok is on top of this trademark dispute. My name is Andrew. I’m a trademark attorney, and I’ve spent over 15 years working with brands from basically zero dollars in sales to hundreds of millions in combined revenue. And one of the common themes in my practice is this: Hot girls read. 😂 Seriously though, the best clients actually read. So when I heard BookTok was mad about the HOT GIRLS READ trademark, I had a strong feeling we might see a cancellation action. And now we have one. The TTAB notice says a petition to cancel has been instituted against the registration, and the trademark owner has 60 days to answer or risk default judgment. So here’s the question: Is this a case that should be resolved in favor of Team Trademark Filing: a business used a phrase, filed for protection, and should be able to protect its brand? Or should it go to Team BookTok: the phrase feels like part of a broader reading community, not something one company should control? The cancellation filing says the mark “is or has become generic.” So tell me where you land: Team BookTok or Team Trademark Filing? Because sometimes the best trademark watchdog is not another lawyer.
