The original book and series by Ursula K Le Guin is a masterpiece worth reading. She was misled into thinking Miyazaki himself would be working directly on it. One of the great tragedies of his career imo. Her books were perfectly suited for a true ghibli film.

If you read the book, the movie is absolutely unwatchable. It’s a loose interpretation and sacrifices a lot of the plot for ? … nothing apparently. It just makes the tradeoff for no alternative payoff.

Maybe it’s terrible to some because the plot is fragmented, but sometimes it’s not always about the plot, it’s about the message that should hit your soul. Not only you need to enjoy what u watch but to learn new perspective from each characters lines and what they are. It seeks to be understood and heard not to be the most interesting and popular.
