its called satellites and a reciever dish. they used a dish in Parks SA to bounce the signal back.

could they have left a satelite half way to bounce the signal? even so it wouldn't be a clear conversation. it would be chopped up into small messages over time

Total bollocks! I listened to it live, of course there was a delay, radio transmissions are limited by light speed. Guess what they did on the recordings? They edited out the annoying pauses for the news broadcasts. Duh! And yes, there was static.
