@christian.autism.adhd: Impulsive doesn’t mean careless. And it definitely doesn’t mean “bad.” When your autistic or ADHD child blurts, grabs, runs, interrupts, or does something before thinking… it’s not because they don’t care about rules. It’s because their brain hits “go” before the brakes have time to work. Impulse control lives in the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for pause, planning, and self-monitoring. In neurodivergent kids, that system often develops more slowly and gets overwhelmed more easily. Add big emotions, sensory input, or excitement… and the brakes disappear completely. So what looks like: “They never listen.” Is often: “Their nervous system moved faster than their thinking brain.” That doesn’t mean we ignore it. It means we teach it differently. Instead of only reacting after the behavior, we build pause skills ahead of time: • Practice “stop and squeeze hands” before entering busy places • Use visual or verbal reminders like “slow body” • Give movement breaks so their body isn’t already overloaded • Narrate the pause: “I saw you stop yourself — that’s your brain getting stronger.” And when they mess up? Correct calmly and clearly: “I can’t let you grab. Let’s try again with asking first.” Shame shuts the brain down. Calm structure helps it grow. Impulse control isn’t built through punishment. It’s built through repetition, support, and co-regulation until their brain can do it on its own. Your child isn’t choosing chaos. Their brain is still learning how to hit the brakes.
