@thekarlstefanovicshow: My Grandfather came here on a boat like many Australians - so did Big Chocky's. And made a beautiful life here. My Conversation with Chocky this afternoon at 530pm. Links in bio to subscribe for free on Youtube, stream on Spotify or Apple.
Immigrants in the past never tried to change the Aussie way of life, my parents fitted in

My grandparents immigrated here with their children including my dad for a better life in the 70's from Portugal. My grandfather worked hard in the Port Kembla steel works to provide for his family. While our traditions were still very present in the home, through food, Catholic faith, learning traditional Portuguese dancing and attending the Portuguese club. They knew that assimilation into Australian life was the only way forward and they did so because it was the better life they wanted. All their children became hard working, law abiding citizens who love and give back to their communities.

The difference is that they arrived with nothing. There were no handouts, no government provided housing, and no safety net. They had no choice but to work hard just to survive. Even their children were forced to grow up quickly and fend for themselves, unlike today where kids are often far more sheltered. Some people say immigrants back then were “different,” and in some ways they were, but what never changed was the racism they faced from white Australians.

Yeah but you should still hold onto your ancestors culture to a tiny degree - even if it just means being proud of your heritage
