Tiangong Omni-04 won gold at the World Humanoid Robot Games, but the bot’s unusual running style is what stole the show. The robot ran with its hands partly covering its face in what developers called a “shy-looking posture” that it discovered autonomously through reinforcement learning. “When you’re shy but still win the race,” one commenter wrote on X. Another added, “they don’t need to run like humans. They just need to keep getting faster.” Tiangong Omni-04 won the 400m race for small robots – those under 1.4m - with a time of 45.66 seconds. Another robot, Tiangong Ultra, beat humankind’s record for one lap of the track with a time of 39.16 seconds. The bot beat the world record held by Wayde van Niekerk, a South African sprinter who ran the distance in 43.03 seconds at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. More than 2,000 robots are competing at the games in Beijing. Usain Bolt’s 100m record – 9.58 - has also been beaten with a time of 9.39. Meng Xiang, an engineer who oversees the robots’ training, said the races are about much more than finishing first, saying: “The goal of our company is to turn robots into products.” He added that the idea was to assess the system, stability and power of the joints to see if robots were "capable of doing many kinds of work that humans do”. That is one of the ideas behind the five-day games, now in their second year: putting humanoid robots through sports and other challenges that test the same abilities they would eventually need in factories, homes and other real-world scenarios. The competition is taking place at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, built for the 2022 Winter Olympics, in the same week as the 2026 World Robot Conference, where companies showcased around 3,000 products, including humanoid robots. Robots are competing in track and field, combat sports, strength and skills tests – like weightlifting and gymnastics – and traditional arts.
