@seanarussell: In 2012, I interviewed Machine Gun Kelly backstage at Warped Tour while producing a project called TopSpot USA. It was one of the toughest interviews I ever did. Long day. Florida heat. Dozens of artists. Tight schedules. Most interviews were happening at the request of PR teams, and we were moving fast. At that point, we didn’t have a massive audience yet, but we had already built a reputation for quality conversations. I walked in asking a generic warm-up question… and MGK immediately checked me. No malice. Just honesty. I had to regroup on the spot, lock back in, and actually engage. Once I did, the conversation clicked, and it turned into a solid interview that still sticks with me years later. That moment changed how I interview forever. Since then, I never walk into a conversation unprepared or disconnected. I lead with genuine curiosity, respect the person across from me, and never rely on filler questions again.
