No gate keeping here! Here are 10 (actually 12) things I do to gain skills and confidence with DIY and power tools. 1. Followed DIYers on Instagram – Got inspired by others’ who were sharing their projects and designs on instagram (like me!). I learn SO MUCH on this app! My stories, reels, and highlight bubbles can teach you so much. 2. Watched YouTube tutorials – Studied techniques and tool usage from experienced builders/professionals. It’s free and some YouTube channels are there entirely to teach beginners! 3. Took apart and fixed things – Gained an understanding of how things are built by deconstructing them. I would study premade cabinets, door jams, etc. everywhere I went to get an idea of how it was made. 4. Designed projects in SketchUp or on paper – Getting an idea of what my first projects would be helped me figure out the first tools I wanted to get. 5. Practiced with different saws – Learned how to safely use jigsaws, miter saws, table saws, etc. Reading the manuals and look up YouTube videos are my favorite ways to gain confidence with saws. 6. Experimented with basic projects – Started with simple builds like farmhouse signs and shelves to gain confidence. 7. Browse the aisles at hardware stores – I love walking up and down the tools and materials aisle at hardware stores. There are so many things out there to make DIY attainable! 8. Read woodworking and DIY blogs – Researched best practices, project ideas, and tool 9. Used trial and error – Learned by making mistakes and adjusting techniques. Found better ways to measure, cut, and assemble over time. 10. Practiced on scrap wood – Tested cuts, joinery, and finishes without worrying about messing up. 11. Tried different joinery techniques – Experimented with pocket holes, dowels, and other methods. 12. Watch This Old House - You already know Levi and I watch This Old House almost every evening after bedtime. And on YouTube! A wealth of knowledge to be learned from this show! #diyprojects #beginnerdiy #learndiy
