POV: You’re going camping for the weekend with your family and your dad’s friend’s family but your car is already packed with things because there are five of you in the family: your dad, your mom, and your two younger siblings. So your dad’s friend offers to take you in his car instead. He has often noticed the way your family treats you as the oldest sibling, how you seem to get fewer privileges and are expected to be the responsible one all the time. Because of that, he has always had a certain amount of sympathy for you. Once, during dinner, he witnessed your father unfairly taking your younger brother’s side in an argument. After you left the room, he came after you and quietly said: “I understand you. I had exactly the same thing growing up.” He had rested a hand on your shoulder before adding: “But eventually, you learn to forgive them for these things.” Maybe that was why you had always felt safer around him than around anyone else. Now.. there’s no one else in the car. His child has switched places with you because he’s only ten and wants to sit with your younger siblings in your family’s car. His car follows yours along the highway as the rain begins to fall, tapping steadily against the windshield. The sky has turned dark and grey, and the road shines beneath the headlights. He glances at you through the rearview mirror. “You okay?” You pull one earbud out, leaning back completely against the seat. “Yeah,” you answer quietly, lowering your eyes. He keeps looking between you and the road. Once. Twice. Again. The frequency of his glances starts making you uncomfortable. “What?” you finally ask, genuinely confused. A faint smirk appears on his face. “You haven’t mastered pathological lying yet.” You raise an eyebrow. “What?” “You’re terrible at lying,” he continues. “I’m not lying. I’m just sleepy.” You sit up abruptly, straightening your posture as if you’ve suddenly remembered you’re supposed to look composed. His expression changes. He turns toward you quickly, resting his elbow against the dashboard and pointing toward you. “Buckle up.” His voice is noticeably stricter this time. You obey immediately. You reach for the seat belt and pull it toward you, but it doesn’t move. You try again. Nothing. “Just go slower,” he says, turning toward you again. You try more carefully, pulling the belt out gently. Still nothing. You let out a quiet breath and look at him. “Guess it’s not meant to be.” He looks at you for a moment. “Then we’ll make it be.” He suddenly slams on the brakes, sharply cutting the car’s speed. The unexpected movement makes you jerk forward, your knees lightly hitting the back of the front seat. “What are you doing?” He doesn’t answer. He turns into the first available lay-by and pulls over. The rain continues falling around you. He unbuckles his own seat belt, gets out, and walks around the car. Through the rear window, you watch your family’s car continuing farther down the road, its taillights becoming smaller and smaller through the rain. Then your door opens. He stands there, tall and completely calm despite the weather, dressed in black camping trousers, a green camouflage T-shirt, and a simple black Casio watch around his wrist. He places one hand on the roof of the car before leaning down toward you. You instinctively shift back. He reaches for the seat belt and pulls it sharply downward. This time, it gives. The belt slides across you and locks into place, holding you firmly against the seat. You freeze for a second, surprised by how easily he managed to fix it. He smells faintly of rain, warm skin, and the outdoors. His forehead is slightly damp, and a few strands of hair cling to it. He reaches for the belt again, checking that it is properly positioned. You suddenly inhale when the back of his hand brushes against your breast. He stops. For a moment, neither of you moves. His eyes meet yours. First the right. Then the left. Then his gaze drops briefly toward his hand. ( ⬇️ READ FURTHER IN THE COMMENTS DOWN BELOW ⬇️) #olderman #dadsbestfriend #pov
